​K-12 Schools

  • For the 2019-20 school year, 56.5 million students will attend public and private elementary and secondary schools

    • 35.6 million will attend pre-K through 8th grade

    • 15.1 million students will attend 9-12 grade

  • Approximately 50.8 million students will attend public schools in 2020

  • For the 2019-20 school year, 3.7 million teachers will be in both private and public school classrooms: 3.2 million in public schools and 0.5 million in private.

California has the largest student enrollment of any state for both elementary and secondary schools, followed closely by Texas.

Colleges - USA

  • Between 2018 and 2019 there were 21.9 million students enrolled in colleges and universities

  • In 2018, 42.8% of all persons between age 16 and 24 were not enrolled in school

  • In Fall 2019 Semester, of approximately 18.2 million students:

  • 7.9 million enrolled in public 4-year colleges

  • 3.8 million enrolled in private non-profit 4-year colleges

  • 750,000 enrolled in private, for-profit 4-year colleges

  • 5.3 million enrolled in public 2-year colleges

In the 2017–18 school year, there were 3.5 million full- and part-time public school teachers, including 1.8 million elementary school teachers and 1.8 million secondary school teachers.1 Overall, the number of public school teachers in 2017–18 was 18 percent higher than in 1999–2000 (3.0 million).

Online Education Statistics

In 2017, a total of 19.7 million students enrolled in courses at degree-granting postsecondary institutions. Of these, 6.6 million students enrolled in some form of distance education/online learning courses.

  • 5.5 million undergraduate students

    • 3.2 million (19.5%) students took least one but not all of their courses online

    • 2.2 million (13.3%) students enrolled in exclusively distance education/online courses

  • 1.4 million post-baccalaureate students

    • 274,211 (9.1%) students took at least one but not all of their courses online

    • 868,708 (28.9%) students enrolled in exclusively distance education/online courses

  • During the fall 2017 semester, 3.1 million (15%) students enrolled exclusively in distance education courses:

    • 142,840 were outside the United States

    • 1.1 million were outside the state of the school where they enrolled

    • 1.7 million were within the same state of the school where they enrolled

    • The location or state was unknown for 33,610 students
